Prometheus was the Titan who stole the sacred fire from Zeus and the gods in order to give it to mortals. He was then punished by Zeus for failure to tell him that one of his son's would overthrow him. Zeus ordered for Prometheus to be eternally chained in the Caucasus. There, he would endure endless torment by having his liver eaten-day after day- by an eagle. Some 30,000 years later, Heracles would come to free Prometheus by finally killing the eagle.
That was Prometheus the Greek fire god. This breathtaking picture of Jupiter’s moon Io was taken by the Galileo spacecraft while it orbited around Jupiter. It shows two sulfurous eruptions: one is Pillan Patera (at the top of the moon’s edge), and the other is Prometheus plume (located in the center of the picture) which was named after the Titan due to it’s almost 18 years of continuous volcanic activity.
My question is: How could something so visually beautiful be so deadly?
(The image was taken by Galileo on June 28, 1997 from a distance of 600,000 kilometers.)

That's really nice picture. I really love these pictures from space and planetary pictures too.
Few weeks ago I saw this science show ( sadly didn't see the whole show) about Titan. That's moon orbiting Saturn, it's like sister planet for earth. The climate and hostile weather over there is similiar to the conditions on earth about 3-4 billoin years ago.
They showed this imaginary picture of horizon when looking from Titan to space, you could see Saturn and it's hoops very clearly, really breath taking sight.
Mr.Krinkle,
I know what you're saying. The universe is so beautiful!
I found a close up of saturn's rings I will post next week since we're talking about space for you to enjoy.
But really, did you see this picture? Breathtaking, wouldn't you agree? And for the record, the picture I posted had been rotated. In reality, the image of Pillan Patera (?) is supposed to be to the left(sideways) and not to the top. The Prometheus plume is in the equator- it's in the dividing line between night and day. Amazing stuff, I tell you.
I'm going back to my basics with this stuff. When I was younger I used to be really into astronomy, etc.

Do you think that those colors have been enhanced? Often they enhance colors to make these pictures look more spectacular?
It's very difficult to see these planets or moons in their original color since they are quite far from here. Same goes with those pictures of Nebulas. Never the less, those pcitures are breathtaking.
The color were enhanced and the image was rotated. I like it when the enhancement is done without too much exaggeration just like this one.
